Part of the problem is that (AFAIK) the torrent will only be downloaded from the tracker of whatever is the.torrent file name. So the question of whether to turn that.torrent into a.zip, or whether to open the.torrent file, or whether to create a.zip file of the.torrent, is moot. That's because the.torrent tracker will never be able to tell what the torrent is - it can only tell that the.torrent file name matches a key in its database, and that it's probably a torrent for some file.
So the trackers will look at your.torrent file name and let you know if they've already got it. You're not losing anything by having a.zip file. You're only losing whatever speed you get from having a single file. If the tracker says it's already got the file, you're wasting a download and/or a download attempt.
I would suggest you just make a.zip file and put the.torrent inside it.
